Navratri, Durga Puja, Karwachauth, Diwali, Bhai Dooj, Govardhan Pooja and My birthday. Not that my birthday is of any national importance but yes! The festive season for the North Indians has officially begun. Festivities at Indian Household means lots of shopping, lots of gifts, lots of fun, laughter and lip-smacking meals.
The Navratri brings with them generously filled King-size Thalis. For the people on fasting, snack time ends with some juice and potato chips. The Durga Puja means, I pay my due respect to the aromatic Awadhi biryani served with boiled egg and potato. If you are someone who eats more laddoos than you pack for your guest, let me remind you…your Karwachauth and Diwali will end on a much sweeter note then you have planned! Spoiler Alert- Holiday Weight!
Spoiler Alert- Holiday Weight! All the hard work you have done in the last few days to fit into this pretty dress will all go in vain if you give in to the festive temptations. You must be thinking, how does one say no to food right in the middle of all these festivities?
Wait! I never said, no to food. We want you to make the most of this festive season with these easy steps to do the trick for you!
Instead of eating what is in front of you, find a healthy alternative
Busy and tired to cook for yourself? Instead of binging on the exotic chocolates, gourmet cookies, and Indian sweets, lying right in front of you, binge on a handful of nuts or a fruit of your choice. Nuts are a rich source of Fat like Omega-6, Omega-3, Fiber, Vitamin E, Minerals including Magnesium and Protein that stimulates your body to burn excess fat and shed those extra kilos.
Pre-plan your meal for the Holiday Season
If you are highly motivated to continue your fitness regime during the festive season, please pre-plan your meal. While your friends and family gorge on the gourmet goodness, you will find it hard to resist the temptation. Instead of eating those fried pooris at the last moment, make a list of things you want to eat, prioritize on must-have and skip the others. Limit your portion size and don’t punish yourself into not eating things you like, it will only increase your cravings.
Don’t skip any meal, instead eat before you leave for the party.
If you are starving your body the whole day, so you can indulge later. At the dinner party, you will end up loading your plate with anything and everything thinking, “It’s fine because I have not eaten anything else today.” Instead of starving yourself, eat light throughout the day!
Monitor your liquid intake. Yes! This includes alcohol!
“Drink Like a Fish”, I say go ahead only if it is water. Reduce your alcohol intake and a high-calorie soda cannot be a substitute for alcohol. While one glass of wine will not harm you, as it is loaded with antioxidants and is suggested to reduce the risk of Cardiovascular Disease, Mixing your drink with juice and aerated drinks will increase your sugar intake promoting weight gain.
Surround yourself with people and friends who support you.
“Have a bite, nothing can go wrong in just one bit!” If these are the words of your friend who is watching you struggle with your food habits, well…you might just want to hang out with people who help you eat right. Let your friends and family know in advance about your decision and let them help you eat as healthy as possible in this festive season.
Do not leave any opportunity to walk and take the stairs.
October Mornings in Delhi is something you should not miss. Make it a habit to walk for at least 30minutes and if you are living an active lifestyle, add another 15-20minutes to your cardio regime. Exercises can be fun – just pick what you like doing. Walk, ride a bicycle or go dancing, just drop the laziness.
